100,000 Korean Students Studying in the U.S. This Year

The number of Korean students studying in the U.S. will reach 100,000 soon.

A recent report from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) department said that Korea ranks first in the number of students registered in U.S. schools (93,728, or 14.9 percent of all foreign students in the U.S.) as of late last year.

Korea was followed by India (76,708), China (60,850), Japan (45,820), Taiwan (33,651), Canada (31,234) and Mexico (14,453).

The number of Korean students in the U.S. increased 12.6 percentage points (from 73,272 late 2004 to 83,854 late 2005). The figure rose 10.5 percentage points in 2006.

The largest number comes from undergraduates (39,365), followed by graduate (36,835), and primary and secondary school students (3,749). The figures show Korea’s zeal for studying abroad at an early age.

In the meantime, Germany placed first in the number of exchange students (18,394), Brazil ranked second (15,992), China third (9,515), and Korea fourth (9,106).
