It was revealed that four South Korean prisoners of war who were captured during the Korean War (1950-1953) and kept in North Korea were recently returned. According to relevant authorities, the POWs left North Korea early this year for a third nation and returned to South Korea sometime in July. However, details behind the return have yet to be confirmed.
Presently, the four POWs are listed as killed in action and have their ancestral tablets enshrined in the National Memorial. POWs who have returned to South Korea now number 15, including Cho Chang-Ho (age 70). The Ministry of Defense revealed that 343 POWs still remain in North Korea, taking into account the testimonies of returned POWs and defectors, but this number is expected to decrease following the return of the four additional POWs.
