The Korean movie ¡°Chunhyang,¡± directed by Im Kwon-Taek, 65, has been nominated for the 73rd Academy Awards in March in the category of foreign films.
The Los Angeles Times introduced the movie as ¡°Korea¡¯s most ambitious production to date, requiring a four-month shoot, 8,000 extras and about 12,000 period costumes.¡±
It reported that the movie, based on a ¡°stylized folk tale that takes its title from the name of a beautiful courtesan`s daughter,¡± advanced into the competition category of last year¡¯s Cannes International Film Festival -- a first for a Korean film.
The paper reported that there was a high possibility for the movie to receive the Oscar in the foreign film category. The movie will be screened at New Art Theater in Santa Monica, west of Los Angeles, beginning Friday.
