Korean speed skater Lee Kyu-Hyuk set a new world record in the 1,500-meter event at the Olympic Oval Finale International Championship in Calgary, Canada.
Lee clocked in at 1:45.20, shaving 0.36 seconds off the previous world record set by Jakko Jan Leewangh of the Netherlands. Second-place finisher Yusuki Imai of Japan recorded a time of 1:45.49.
In setting the world mark, Lee eclipsed his own Korean record by 1.85 seconds. Lee previously broke the 1,000-meter world record twice in two days during World Cup Series in November 1997 in Canada. Lee has never before held the world record in the 1,500-meter event.
