The Korean national soccer team captured a trophy in an international tournament Thursday for the first time since Guus Hiddink of the Netherlands took the helm in January.
In the finals of the four-nation tournament for the LG Cup at the International Stadium in Cairo, Egypt, Korea stopped the host 2-1 to pocket the prize money of US$50,000.
Ha Seok-Joo scored the opener of the game in the 17th minute of the first half, and his substitute Ahn Hyo-Yeon shot the winning goal, making it 2-1 in the 16th minute of the second half.
Ha, the seasoned left-footer, connected the ball headed by Seol Ki-Hyun in the penalty box and easily beat the Egyptian goalie for a 1-0 lead, but 10 minutes later Abdul Rahman scored an equalizer for a 1-1 tie at the first half.
Hiddink replaced Park Sung-Bae and Ha in the second half with Seo Jeong-Won in the eighth minute and Ahn Hyo-Yeon in the 15 minute, who successfully frustrated the Egyptian defenders at both flanks to enable Ahn to blast the winning shot.
