The railway network linking top 5 provincial cities such as Pusan, Daegu, Kwangju, Daejon, and Ulsan will be extended by 1.8 times from 831 km to 1,550 km until 2011. And the wide-area principal roads will also be extended by 756 km to improve the average traffic speed from 25 km/h to 40 km/h.
The Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MCT) established `the traffic measure on the top-5 provincial cities`. According to `the traffic measure`, the ministry plans to secure the additional 719 km railway by switching the existing railway into electric railway or into two-track line, to amend the existing railways, and to pursue the projects for linking the railway and subway. The ministry expects this plan to improve the transportation share of the railway from current 0.1 percent up to 24 percent.
And the ministry will try to solve the traffic congestion by designating as the wide-area principal road the 18 sections of 116 km, which have had a serious bottleneck problem under respectively different road management offices. The ministry plans to invest 3 trillion and 900 billion won to the road construction project starting 2006.
