71 Pct of Business Executives Express “Worries about Business and Labor Relationship This Year“

7 in 10 executive members in charge of human resources and labor power of large business are expecting a more unstable management and labor relationship this year compared to last year.

According to the survey of executive members of top 100 businesses titled `Prospect of Management and Labor Relationship in 2002` released by the Korea Employers Federation, 71.2 percent of the respondents anticipate an uncomfortable relationship between management and labor this year.

The core elements of the unstable relationship list △ requests for the legal and systematic improvement such as the reduction of legal labor hours (28.2 percent), △ labor circles` attempts to extend political power by taking advantage of the local and presidential elections (19.2 percent), △ protest against restructuring (16.0 percent), and △ request for the guarantee of labor rights for teachers, government officials, and irregular employees (14.7 percent).

On the other hand, the spreading sense of economic crisis due to the economic recession (26.7 percent) and the matured attitudes of the management and the labor side (26.7 percent) were listed as elements for a stable relationship between management and labor.

The most unstable sectors of the business is likely to be the state-owned businesses (32.9 percent) including electricity, railroad, and gas due to the impact of the protest against restructuring, followed by the financial market (16.4 percent), large manufacturing industries (11 percent), and small medium manufacturing industries (8.2 percent).
