Robot arms moving with only two motors are developed.

Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) announced on the 7th that Dr. Jung Woo-Jin (photo) won K.S. Fu Best Paper Award in 2002 from the Transactions on Robotics and Automation of U.S. Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He is the first Korean who won this prize.

The robot arm, Dr. Jung developed with Nakamura Yoshihiko professor from Tokyo Univ., Japan, can move lots of joints with only 2 motors. Existing robot arms require as many motors as joints that the structure of robot arms for hard works is complicated and has many troubles.

Dr. Jung said, “this robot arm can do whatever existing robot arm does, such as picking up something on the floor and hammering. It is advantageous for the works under extreme condition like mending space ships in the space, as it has only a few motors.”

Dr. Jung will receive the prize at the `2002 International Meeting of IEEE Sect of Robotics and Automation` to be held in Washington D.C., U.S.A. from May 10th.
