A map is being drawn in the D RAM market, which has been the main item of exportation for Korea.
In the past, D-RAMs were used mostly in computer manufacturing. Now, new telecommunication devices like cellular phones, computer games, and digital electronics are hitting the market, devices requiring in-built D-RAMs.
Yesterday one senior member of the semiconductor industry confirmed that, even though the computer industry is in slump, a growing demand for the D-RAM comes out from other quarters, making it possible to predict a bright future. Despite the price of the computer D-RAM, prices of other types of D-RAMs have maintained strength. Therefore, the competition among the manufactures is getting more and more heated.
According to D-RAM Exchange, Inc. a company that provides prices of D RAMs in Asia, the prices of D-RAMs used for mobile and digital electronic goods, depending on purpose and type, are 5 times higher than SD-RAM used for computers. As of November, in the Asian market, SD-RAMs for mobile devices and electronic goods are 3.5-4 times and 2.5-3 times higher than SD-RAMs for personal computers.
This difference occurs because of the lack of manufacturers that can produce various types of D RAMs with high technology. Therefore, some experts predict that the gap between the companies that cope swiftly with the market demand and those that cannot will be widened.
Samsung Electronics, Inc., the Korean company that dominates the D-RAM market in the world, occupies the vantage point with its ability to produce various types of D-RAMs with high technology.
Samsung is pitching in its efforts to widen its share in the D-RAM market that generates high values. As part of the efforts, it is supplying D-RAMs to Sony and other major computer manufacturers. In addition, the world largest graphic card manufacturer announced that it would equip its news products with Samsung`s "DDRⅡ 1㎓" D RAMs. Thus, experts predict that Samsung would lead the world in this market.
Lee Yoon-soo, Samsung`s CEO in charge of semiconductors, predicted, during his lecture at Seoul National University, "Demand for D-RAM will grow in our daily life. D-RAMs will be used not only for mobile and digital goods, but also for cars, medical goods, furniture and construction. By 2020, the market will increase 20 times greater than now."
