A modern dance festival, which allows us to see the current flow of the world dance industry, is being held in Daehakro, Seoul. The Korea Modern Dance Association is opening Modafe (Modern Dance Festival) 2004 from April 14 to May 2 at the Arts Center in Dongsoong, Jongro and the Marronnier Art Center. Modafe, which received great praise for introducing state-of-the-art performances like “The Time” from dance, art, performance, and media industries last year, is again introducing various genres including 17 teams from 10 countries. The following are the major performances:

Beauty and the Beast: Young artists of various departments such as theatre, music, dance, and image perform the story of “Beauty and the Beast” at Marronnier Art Center from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for three weeks starting April 14. It is a relay cooperative work, which makes it an “image collage” movie by mirroring the filmed performance.

Emio Greco (April 22 to 23): Emio Greco, who opens up this performance, is a spotlighted choreographer. He received the Edinburgh Critics Award, Phillip Morris Award and many more. His dance, “Conjunto di NERO” shows the depth of various levels of darkness with lights and sound formed by the characteristics of air.

Xavier Le Roy (April 27): Roy is a leading choreographer in Europe’s modern dance industry. The performing piece is “Self-Unfinished,” which was highly praised at Lyon Biennale and the Vienna Festival. It shows how much the human body can be modified through a robot’s movement.

Peeping Tom (April 29 to 30): A Belgian dance company, Peeping Tom, which is popular throughout Europe, is performing “Le Jardin.” Through normal people’s eyes, who desire for erotic shows in a nightclub, they show the turn-over of the common sense of beauty in an ironic way. After, they compare it to a realistic family ruled by common sense.

Folkwang Tanzstudio (May 1 to 2): Folkwang Tanzstudio (Germany) is performing “Please Hold My Hand,” choreographed by Korean modern dancer Ahn Eun-mee. This dance was made when Ahn was invited as a guest choreographer last year, and the company has already successfully ended their German tour.
