Environment Deputy Minister Wangari Maathai (age 64) of Kenya was chosen for the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize.

Ole Danbolt Mjos, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee which is composed of five members, announced at 11:00 a.m. (local time) on Friday, October 8 that Wangari Maathai would receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Maathai is a female environmental activist who is leading the “Green Belt Movement,” which has planted more than 30 million trees across Africa.

This is the first time for an African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Interestingly, it is the second year in a row for a woman to win this award, following last year’s winner, Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian human activist and lawyer.

The 2004 Nobel Peace Prize had the most candidates ever with 194 individuals and organizations being considered.

The winner receives 10 million in Swedish krona (approximately 1.5 billion won).
