Is Venezuela Liquidating the Past?

Protestors in Venezuela on Tuesday are bringing down the statue of Christopher Columbus in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas. President Hugo Chavez argued that Columbus was responsible for the slaughter of natives and changed the occasion of “the day of Columbus” to “the day of native Indians’ resistance,” which initiated his country’s liquidation of the past.
