3,000 KIA

As of December 31, 2006, the number of American soldiers killed in action in Iraq since the Iraqi War broke out on March 2003 surpassed 3,000. Volunteers are laying out empty coffins and preparing for a memorial event to the memory of the 3000th death at a temporary cemetery in the sands of Santa Monica, California.
