Google on September 13 announced a $30 million contest called “Moonshot” that could boost non-governmental flights to the moon. The giant Internet company partnered with the X Prize Foundation and will award the first private company that can land a robotic rover on the moon, travel at least 500 meters, and beam back a gigabyte of images and video to Earth. The $30 million prize will be available through the end of the year 2012.
