Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk was visited by Democratic Party Chairman Chung Sye-kyun yesterday at Seoul archdiocese church in Myeong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul. Cardinal Cheong asked Chung to engage firmly in representative politics at National Assembly, not politics on the streets.
Cardinal Cheong said, We are living in a nation of representative democracy, thus the desires and hopes of various people should be fulfilled by the National Assembly. Political leaders should not just consider the domestic side of the matter but also think of how the international community will perceive us.
Regarding the candlelight rallies, he said, When something happens on the streets of Korea, it is aired all over the world. In the end, it is possible that less people will invest in Korea, and less people will want to travel to Korea. The result will be that the Korean people as a whole will experience a loss, instead of a certain group benefiting from it.
