Firefighters put out Sunday a burning bus set ablaze by protesters in Urumqi, the capital of China’s far western province of Xinjiang. Uighur protesters took to the streets to demand independence of the region. The Chinese government suppressed the riots, with the death toll at 140 dead and 828 injured, the worst bloodbath in China since the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.
