Military vehicles of the last U.S. combat unit in Iraq cross an Iraqi border to enter Kuwait Thursday. This ended the 2,707-day long U.S. military operation in Iraq that began with the invasion of the Arab country on March 20, 2003. Washington will pull out its remaining 50,000 non-combat troops by the end of next year. Some urge an extended presence of U.S. troops, however, due to growing fears over a security vacuum stemming from a series of terrorist bombings and the unstable political situation in Iraq.
