2nd-round Advance for Sharapova

The world`s 17th-ranked player Maria Sharapova of Russia hits a backhand return to Jarmila Groth of Australia (60th) in the first round of the U.S. Open in New York Wednesday. Sharapova advanced to the second round after beating Groth 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
