Ahn speaks out all possibilities of his political status

On his future course of action after the April 24 by-election, Ahn Cheol-soo, an independent candidate who is running for in Seoul’s Nowon C district, said he is open to all different possibilities, including founding of a new political party, joining of the main opposition Democratic United Party, and maintaining of his political independence.

When asked in a radio interview if he considers all three options of founding of a new political party, joining of the Democratic United Party, and remaining as an independent politician, Ahn said, “All these are possible by mean number of cases. Of course, the probability for individual options will vary.” The remarks are to suggest that he is open to all possibilities, but it is the first time that Ahn has hinted at the possibility to join the Democratic United Party. Appearing in a radio interview was also his first since entering politics.

Some political analysts said on Ahn`s remarks. "It was a strategic statement meant to garner vote from Democratic United Party supporters.” Against this view, Ahn sent a telephone message to reporters to clarify, saying, “It was an answer given merely as a principle to the hypothetical question by the show host. I have never hinted at joining a certain political party, nor am I considering it," denying too broad interpretation of his remarks. “I will humbly accept the result, and display the process through which I overcome it, and thereby will work harder to make strides. I will continue (politics),” Ahn answered to a question asking if he will quit politics if he fails in the upcoming election.
