Korean Air and Asiana Airline planes collided at the taxiway of Gimpo International Airport around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Fortunately, no one was injured as the accident occurred before the passengers got on board.
According to the two airline companies, Korean Air’s KE2725, which was expected to depart for Osaka, Japan at 9:05 a.m., was heading towards gate 35 to board passengers. However, there was another plane in front of the gate and KE2725 was ordered by the control tower to wait, stopping for some four minutes. At this time, Asiana Airlines plane OZ3355, which was to depart for Beijing, China at 8:50 a.m. collided into the Korean Air plane while moving behind KE2725 to move to gate 39 to board passengers. The end part of the Asiana Airline plane’s right wing (winglet, the end part of the curbed wing towards the sky) collided with the bottom part of the tail of the Korean Air plane. There was about four hours delay in departure due to this collision accident of the two companies.
“The Management Office of Gimpo Airport will investigate the process, cause, and status of damage regarding the accident in detail and take necessary follow-up measures,” said an official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
