Looks Aren't Everything

Almost everyone has a part of their body that they do not like. They may think that they are too short, their nose is too big, or their eyes are too small. So it seems natural that people would think about changing their looks through plastic surgery. As surgery gets cheaper, more people will choose to do this.

But how far would you go just to make yourself look good? Every day on television and in movies, we see beautiful and fit actors and models. But for them, looking good and acting happy is a 24-hour job, and they spend much of their time exercising and taking care of the way they look. Most have gotten plastic surgery to look younger.

In our society, appearance is important, and unfortunately, many people will judge you by the way you look. But in the end, these judgments will have very little to do with who you really are. If you worry too much about how you look to others, you may forget the more important question-how you look to yourself.

Changing your looks may help you now, but in the long run, knowing who you are and having confidence in yourself will lead to greater happiness. Make a list of things that are really valuable to you. You will probably find that a smaller nose or bigger eyes are not very high on that list.

■ 총평

노혜준 학생 글은 자신의 경험을 바탕으로 누군가에게 이야기를 하듯이 글을 전개해 가는 narrative essay 형식을 보여 주고 있다. 이러한 narrative essay는 서론 본론 결론 부분으로 구성된 다른 종류의 essay와 비슷한 구조를 가지고 있으며 보다 개인적이고 독창적이라고 볼 수 있다.

노혜준 학생의 글이 비교적 짧기 때문에 서론(introduction), 본론(body), 결론(conclusion)을 나누기는 어렵지만 이 글의 도입부는 자신이 불공정(unfair)하다고 여긴 경험에 대해 쓰고자 한다는 것을 독자들에게 살짝 드러내 보이면서 독자의 관심을 유도하며 시작하고 있다.

이 글의 첫 문장(When people adjust a different standard to one and another, we think that's unfair)은 그러한 역할을 하는데 이러한 문장들을 ‘hook’라고 한다. 우리가 낚시질을 할 때 미끼를 던지는 것과 같은 효과라고 보면 된다.

또한, 이 글은 등장인물에 대한 묘사(… my sister. She is on 3rd grade in high school…)와 이야기의 배경이 되는 장소(my room)와 때(present tense)를 제시하고 있다. 또한 글의 중간 부분에 구체적인 supporting information을 나열하고 있고 마지막 부분에 도입부에서 언급했던 내용(unfairness)과 연결된 내용으로 결론 부분을 마무리함으로써 narrative essay의 형식을 따르고 있다. 노혜준 학생의 글에서 다소 아쉬운 점은 자신의 경험을 이야기하는 부분이 구체적으로 전개되지 않았다는 것이다. 본론(body) 부분에서 자신이 언니와 방을 같이 쓰면서 불공정하다고 느꼈던 경험을 구체적인 사건을 예로 들어 시간적인 순서대로 묘사했더라면 좀 더 흥미로운 글이 되었을 것 같다.
