Here are some suggestions for how to act during the first encounter. |
1. The Nonverbal Encounter
① | Establish eye contact. Eye contact is the first nonverbal signal to send. The eyes show an interest in the other person. |
② | Maintain a posture that shows an openness. Hands crossed over the chest are exactly the kind of postures that you want to avoid. These are often interpreted to signal an unwillingness to let others enter your space. |
③ | Reinforce positive behaviors. Reinforce those behaviors by responding positively to them ; nod or smile or somehow indicate your favorable reaction. |
2. The Verbal Encounter
① | Introduce yourself. Try to avoid opening lines which are too often used. Do not become identified with, "Haven't I seen you here before?" Many think that this kind of question is a measure of your intelligence and wit. In such situation, it is probably best to simply say, "Hi, my name is Darren." |
② | Establish commonalities. Seek to discover these things you have in common with the other person - attitudes, interests, personal qualities, third parties, places, and so on. |
③ | Avoid yes/no questions. Ask questions that the receiver may answer at some length. |
