오늘 준비한 내용은 국내의 폭설관련 뉴스와 용평배 국제 알파인 스키대회, 해외는 ‘스키황제’ 헤르만 마이어의 재기전 소식입니다

▼첫번째 소식은 폭설 관련 뉴스입니다.

연합뉴스에 따르면 강원 산간 및 영동지역에 최고 50㎝가 넘는 눈이 내린데다 아침기온이 영하로 떨어지면서 노면이 얼어 15일 미시령 구간이 이틀째 전면통제되고 일부 마을이 고립됐다고 합니다. (스키어들에겐 반가운 뉴스 아닌가요^^)

이날 아침 눈발은 그쳤으나 인제-고성구간 미시령에 51㎝의 눈이 쌓이고 노면이 얼어 인제-고성간 미시령의 차량운행이 이틀째 전면통제되고 있으며 경찰은 인근 진부령과 한계령으로 우회시키고 있다는 군요. (다행히 진부령은 통행이 가능하다니 이번주에는 진부령 고원분지에 위치한 알프스 스키장으로 원정을 떠나는 것도 고려해 볼만 할것 같습니다.)

영동고속도로 대관령구간은 18.5㎝의 눈이 내렸으나 제설작업이 이뤄져 정상소통되고 있답니다.(용평 스키장은 이번주말에 미어 터질 것 같네요.)

▼다음은 한때 세계 최고의 알파인 스키선수로 한시대를 풍미했던 ‘스키 황제’ 헤르만 마이어(오스트리아)의 재기전에 관한 소식입니다.

마이어는 2년전 끔찍한 오토바이 사고로 중상을 당해 2년여 동안 스키를 타지 못한 것은 다 아실것으로 믿습니다.

마이어가 15일 스위스에서 열린 월드컵시리즈 슈퍼대회전(Super G)에 출전했습니다. 일단 경기 결과는 실망스럽습니다. 마이어는 첫번째 레이스에서 31위를 차지했습니다. 하지만 기준기록에 0.5초나 뒤져 2차레이스를 펼칠 자격조차 얻지 못했다는 군요. 하지만 사고 당시 마이어의 다리상태가 걷는 것 조차 힘들 거라는 진단을 받은 것을 상기한다면 다시 스키 경기에 참가했다는 사실 자체만으로도 그는 승리자라는 동료들의 말에 고개가 끄덕여집니다.

올해로 14년째 월드컵 시리즈에 참가하고 있는 마이어는 올림픽과 월드컵 시리즈에서 총 17개의 메달을 따낸 바 있습니다.

Intrusive or inspirational, Hermann Maier's comeback has left no one indifferent.

Returning for the first time since almost losing a leg in a

horrendous motorbike accident almost two years ago, the Herminator has evoked a range of intense feeling in those around him, grabbing the headlines with his compelling comeback, diverting the spotlight from the moment's victors and leaders in the sport.

Though disappointed with the result of Tuesday's comeback race _finishing an aggravating 31st, just one spot and .05 seconds away from advancing to the second run of a giant slalom _ Maier acknowledged his return was a victory in itself.

``It was such a severe injury, his leg was almost hanging off after the accident,'' said Knut Okresek, Maier's spokesman. ``It's a miracle he can walk, run, be fit. It's amazing he can stand at the top of this ski slope and do what he has done.''

A feat which required incontestable courage and determination.

``I think it's great he's coming back,'' said Norway's Kjetil Andre Aamodt, a 14-year veteran of the World Cup and the winner of 17 Olympic and world medals. ``It must be difficult for him, it's been almost two years and he almost lost his leg.

``It shows he still has potential. His character is so strong I wouldn't be surprised if he comes back next year and wins it all.''

But not everyone was as enthusiastic about Maier's

highly-publicized return.

Despite posting his first victory since his own bad crash on the slopes in 2000, Hans Knauss saw his triumphant return to the world's elite Tuesday almost completely eclipsed by his illustrious teammate's presence.

Though complimentary about Maier, calling him ``one of the

greatest skiers of all time,'' Knauss refused to dwell on Maier during his post-victory press conference.

``I was happy to comment on Hermann. But I think I've answered enough questions about him,'' Knauss answered politely but firmly.

``However, I'd be happy to answer anymore questions regarding my race.''

Teammate Stephan Eberharter, who replaced Maier as World Cup overall, downhill and super-G champion in his absence, quickly left the finish area after a disappointing opening run, not even watching Maier comeback effort.

The previous day, Eberharter was noticeably cool after being ignored on the slopes as journalists and television crews clustered around Maier following course inspection.

Eberharter has reason to be defensive.

During Maier's four-year reign over the World Cup, Eberharter repeatedly found himself in second place, and was forced to endure endless questions about his failure to overcome his exalted teammate.

Following Maier's accident, Eberharter's accomplishments were put into question, many doubting whether he would have known such success had his teammate been around to challenge him.

Now, despite a strong bid to defend his overall title, despite winning three Olympic medals in Salt Lake City, including a gold in the giant slalom, Eberharter is once again sitting in Maier's shadow.

But Maier appears oblivious to any disturbance he may have

created or any animosity directed at him.

``I really appreciated the welcome I've received,'' Maier said.

``Everyone has been really good to me.''

Maier appeared intent on continuing his comeback efforts, despite Tuesday's setback.

``It was a bit disappointing. I expected more, but I probably wanted too much,'' he said. ``In training I was faster than my teammates.

``I made a lot of errors. Nevertheless, there were still a lot of guys who finished behind me who weren't off for nearly two years.''

Maier's presence will continue to arouse and agitate, the

former-bricklayer from Flachau announcing he would train for the back-to-back downhills scheduled in Wengen this weekend before deciding whether to race.

``It's only by competing that I'll find my rhythm again,'' Maier said.
