제2차 세계대전 회고록의 고전(the classic memoir)으로 손꼽히는 ‘안네 프랑크, 소녀의 일기(Anne Frank, Diary of a Young Girl). 이 작품의 영향력은 오랜 세월이 흐른 지금도 여전합니다(impact has lasted through generations). 오랫동안 걸작으로 남아 있는 이유는 과연 무엇일까요(Why has it remained such an important book for such a long period of time.) 무엇보다도 작품에 담긴 강렬한 반전 테마(powerful anti-war themes)에 있습니다.

안네 프랑크가 독자를 염두에 두고 일기를 쓰지는 않았습니다(Anne Frank’s goal was, of course, to write a journal for herself and not for others to read). 자기 자신을 위해 그날그날의 일을 기록한 겁니다. 하지만 책을 통해 고난과 역경의 시대(a time of great difficulty and suffering)를 살았던 어린 소녀의 개인적인 생각을(intimate and private thoughts)을 접하면서 독자들은 소녀에게 감정을 이입(empathy)하게 됩니다.

작품 속에서 반전 테마는 크게 두 가지 방식으로 전달됩니다(The anti-war theme comes across in two ways). 하나는 직접적으로 전쟁의 폐해를 묘사하는 방식인데, 안네와 가족이 헤쳐 나가야 하는 역경들(the difficult circumstances Anne and her family have to go through)을 다룬 대목에서 잘 나타납니다. 좁은 다락방에서 낯선 사람들과 지내는 불편함(the discomfort of living with other strangers in a cramped attic), 밖으로 나가지 못하는 일(not being able to go outside), 정부 당국자에게 잡혀갈지 모른다는 지속적인 불안감(the constant fear of being caught by the authorities) 등 안네와 가족은 전쟁으로 인해 시작된 갑작스러운 고난에 적응해야만 했습니다.

반전 테마를 전달하는 방식이 하나 더 있습니다(There is another way the diary conveys a strong anti-war theme). 좀 더 간접적인 방법(more of an indirect way)입니다. 사실 일기의 대부분은 부모님에 대한 반항심(her rebellious feelings towards her parents), 좀 더 어른으로 대접받고 싶은 마음(her desire to be treated more like an adult), 소년에 대한 첫사랑의 감정(her first romantic feelings for a boy) 등 안네의 ‘소녀로서의 삶(Being a girl)’을 묘사합니다. 일기라는 작품의 속성상 어머니와의 복잡한 관계(her complex relationship with her mother), 자매와의 소원한 관계(her lack of a bond with her sister), 다락방에 함께 숨어 있는 피터에 대한 감정(all the emotions she feels for Peter, another boy hiding out in the attic) 등 안네가 숙녀로 성장하면서 생기는 지극히 은밀하고 개인적인 일도 알 수 있게 됩니다.

‘안네 프랑크, 소녀의 일기’는 우리 모두가 경험한 성장통을 겪는 친구의 이야기라서 비교적 친근감 있게 읽는 작품이지만, 이 때문에 오히려 내용이 훨씬 더 비극적으로 다가옵니다 (Reading so intimately about a fellow human being, going through the growing pains of life that we all go through, make the book that much more tragic).

종교적 믿음이 다르다는 이유로(simply for the fact that she is someone with different religious beliefs) 영리하고 사랑스러우며 죄 없는 소녀가 고통 받는 현실을 마주하면서(this intelligent, lovable, innocent child has to suffer) 우리는 안네가 처한 상황에 대해(towards the circumstance she’s caught up in) 울분과 분노(outrage and anger)를 느낍니다. 그 상황은 전쟁이라는 완전한 광기를 의미하고요(And that circumstance is the utter madness of war).

인간으로서 지녀야 할 유대감을 깨닫게 하면서 독자에게 교훈을 주는 책인 거죠(It’s a book like this that can enlighten us, to make us more aware of the bond we have as human beings).
